Maîtresse

Isn't this a wonderful image! Although Ariane is dressed to play a certain role, she looks so vulnerable and doubtful.

The film does a good job of not answering why certain people find certain things pleasurable. For there is no right or wrong types of pleasure, moral or immoral - even what's legal depends on who's making the law and at what time.

Maîtresse asks the audience how far can we align ourselves with the characters onscreen through things like camera placement and editing. And why it's necessary or possible to feel how they feel in order to understand them. The film threads through different levels of understanding: the kind that's immediate through the body and without asking for the viewer's permission, and a sympathy based on the narrative and thoughts which comes afterwards.
