Week 10: Narrative - Same Plot, Different Mood

In his video essay 'The Origin of Baby Driver and Drive', Patrick Willems explores the history of the getaway driver as a film protagonist and outlines the narrative framework that defines movies such as Walter Hill's The Driver, Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, and Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. Although they firmly stick to this narrative framework, Drive and Baby Driver each create their own unique tone and mood which I will discuss in more detail in Monday's seminar. To see how the same sequence of events can be used to create different moods, see the openings of Drive and Baby Driver - which both introduce their protagonist through a heist followed by a car chase. Enjoy!
